Sheltered the family from the upheavals and changes that come with modernity. There was an idea that the home was a quiet place to retire after the day"s work. Style supposed to create a cosy interior and atmosphere. Was supposed to convey the idea of a calm environment. There was blame placed upon the servant if the husband was to have an affair.
