The full emancipation was a gradual process in the americas throughout the 19th c. Only in haiti was there the only black republic of the americas, and only (arguably) successful slave rebellion of the colonial period. A series of conflicts that included french, british, spanish, free people of colour, and slaves. Slaves played a major role in gaining their freedom and developing what would become. Established by french buccaneers in the mid 1600s. Dedicated to cash crops on plantations of slaves p(cid:396)oduced half the wo(cid:396)ld"s stock of sugar and coffee. Life was brutal and short like elsewhere in the caribbean. Slaves only had a few small revolts in the 1700s, so planters mostly able to have full control.
