Trade in slaves across the atlantic ocean. Before the year 1820, 2. 5 million europeans migrated to the americas, and 8. 5 million africans were transported their in slave ships. So far in this course we usually think about immigration/migration from the europeans perspective, europeans moving to the new colonies, etc: what"s really happe(cid:374)i(cid:374)g is (cid:374)ot o(cid:374)ly the europea(cid:374) settle(cid:373)e(cid:374)ts (cid:271)ut the large for(cid:272)ed migration ever. Africans were sent to those other nations (~40%) compared to the us (4%) 1806-07 britain abolished the slave trade, and single-handedly stopped the atlantic trade. How do you get slaves to trade: looking at west africa. European ships visited africa, and tried to stay for as least of time as possible as they were susceptible to disease. Relied on african traders and elites to go into the interior to buy or fight for other africans, so that the african elites could sell them off to the european traders. Europeans are dependent on africa to get slaves.
