(cid:1) Diaspora diaspora = immigrants (people living where they were not born) Derived from greek word for scattering or dispersion . Describes dispersion of populations from more concentrated geographical area / Bound up with notions of expulsion forced, constrained, involuntary movement. Complex feeling about home/return yearning, ambivalence, im/possibility of return. Diasporic communities often invested in notions of belonging, family, genealogy, motherland/fatherland, reproduction (can be heteronormative) (example of diaspora making people more conservative) Retrenched/ deepend investment in notions of family with heteronormative o gender norms in notions of belonging o conservatism. Being displaced can make you feel more traditional and nostalgia to cultural. Lgbtq politics often focused on sexual politics of the nation, e. g. marriage, military service (can be nationalist) o. Focus on fitting into dominant norm in institutions in society.
