Immersed in social setting for an extended period of time. Makes regular observations of the behavior of members of that setting. Writes up a detailed account of the setting. Micro-ethnography: focus on one aspect of an issue, in order to save time which is ideal for students. Ethnographic research does not always take place in foreign countries or exotic locations. Corporate ethnography examines the patterns of every day life, providing value to companies by better understanding their clients. How do you gain access to the social setting you are observing. Open setting: relatively public (shopping mall, night club, street, etc. but also includes public networks such as drug users and gangs) Closed setting: organizations such as firms, schools, cults, social movements and political parties. Perseverance, luck, hanging around and use of contract networks often needed to gain access. May lead to violent or uncomfortable reactions from participants. Coverte: infiltrate group without informing of research involvement.
