For400y - lecture 6: living and working in the shadow of wildfire in canada. Bc has the most fires but not usually big ones (until this year) Moving away from this policy following new policies that ontario has adopted. Spend a lot of money fighting fire. But still get a lot of fire by default. Make landscape patchy so hard for huge fire to burn through. So that when fire arrives, can protect communities (wue) Have some years where have huge spikes in number of fires. Couple of years where quite a few big fires. But seeing upward trend with more and more big fires over the years. Synthesis of knowledge of extreme fire behaviour volume 2 for fire behaviour. Don"t necessarily need drought to have extreme fire behaviour. Dry = fire burns, wind = fire moves. Polar bears stranded on ice and swimming. Visible impact of climate change in impact. Big concern b/c really hard to put out.
