ESS361H1 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Osmosis, Soil Texture, Field Capacity
Document Summary
Although the soil water cannot be sharply demarcated, yet for sake of understanding and as per utility of water to plant it is mainly classified into following categories. Profile of soil a. b. w/ water c. Groundwater (saturated) table: upper surface of groundwater: level below soil. Saturated soil: zone where max amount of moisture the soil can hold if every space b/w soil grain is filled. Unsaturated water flow: movement of water in soil not filled to capacity. Moves b/c of suction differences (moves towards areas of greater suction i. e. drier soil) Available water: water content difference b/w field capacity and permanent wilting point of your soil at any given depth. Amount of water held by soil; an amount falling b/w field capacity and wilting point. Plant available water is easy to calculate, but accurate estimates of both field capacity and permanent wilting point are necessary for the value to be helpful in irrigation scheduling.
