Document Summary

The allusions make it hard for the reader to enjoy if they do not understand them. If you feel the way prufrock feels, you will understand that he cannot put his feelings into words. Prufrock and t. w. l. are similar in this way. Eliot showed the generation a new way to think of the times/the world. There is no truth in the wasteland. He believed the world is in fragments but there is still something universal. He thought shared culture was disappearing, ex: folk songs, rituals, myths, beliefs. Woolf gave up on plot and narrated according to stream of consciousness. Technique that tries to capture how our mind perceives the world. The method of writing smooth narrative can"t be right. Things don"t happen in one"s mind like that. We experience, all the time, an overlapping of images and ideas, and modern novels should convey our mental confusion instead of neatly rearranging it. The reader must sort it out. - virginia woolf.
