Bargaining structure in canada is highly decentralized. Single employer-single establishment-single union is most common structure. Other structures may involve multi employer, establishment and/or union. Parties can aggregate up from the certification unit to negotiating at a broader level. Refers to negotiations in a lead bargaining unit being used a model in following units. Advantage: saves negotiation time and reduces work stoppages in the following units. Management: ensures not at a competitive disadvantage. Unifor targets one of the detroit three major auto company each set of negotiations. Pattern bargaining previously declined during the 1980s and 1990s in industries such as meatpacking and forestry. Decline due to foreign competition, more flexible work practices and employee involvement. Ex: arguing over what the wage increase will be; if the union achieves higher wage increase, it"ll increase cost and lower profits for the company.
