EEB362H1 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: George Gaylord Simpson, Henry Fairfield Osborn, Sympatric Speciation
Document Summary
Do not look across the tips of the branches: they are the products of the same speciation event, so have to look down in the tree. Just because taxa are right beside each other doesn(cid:495)t mean they(cid:495)re sister groups. Sister groups are each other(cid:495)s closest relative: but ancestor (cid:883) doesn(cid:495)t exist anymore so it(cid:495)s represented by b, c, d, e etc. Need to know what the traits on the tree tell you about what(cid:495)s going on evolutionary. A is the sister group of ancestor 1: nodes are speciation events. Important for looking at sequences of character evolution. If pointed teeth came up after species started eating meat, then this possibly an adaptation. There are some commonalities for the idea, but most people don(cid:495)t agree with what it is. There is a common theme concerning adaptive radiations though: look at groups with a lot of adaptive change, look at groups with a lot of species with adaptive change, so 2 components:
