Document Summary

Lecture 17 stage-structured populations cont"d & sensitivity + elasticity. Drawing a lifecycle graph (lecture 18 structured populations slides) Looking at changes in stages from time-step to time-step. Went from description of lifecycle to lifecycle graph. Have a sequence of processes that connect abundances of stages we"re interested in. When build graph, have 2 distinct components: (1) state variables (abundances of stages, (2) demographic parameters (connect state variables) Aka demographic functions that determine the abundances of the variables. Connect components of lifecycle (in flour beetle case was cannibalism) Can read off arrows from lifecycle graph: give us transitions from one year to the next, write down mathematical expression that formalizes transitions. Can count how many terms in equation you need by number of arrows entering the variable: ex: there are 2 arrows entering the adult stage. From those equations can use matrix multiplication to write down what the equations look like when represented in matrix form.
