Trying to observe independent units: the characteristics of a unit are not influenced by those of other units. Measurements made at one or more points in time or space with no interference by experimenter the only treatment is time or space. Model statement summarizes main variables in a study shorthand for summarizing a study: y=x. Outcome = factor response variable = explanatory variable. Eliminate bias: due to confounding, etc. Random assignment to treatments: averages out effects of confounding variables cancelling out the effect on the outcome.
