EEB215H1 Lecture Notes - Lecture 19: Banff National Park, Bighorn Sheep, Trans-Canada Highway
Document Summary
Habitat in between larger areas: goes through the matrix. Facilitates movement of biodiversity or genes to increase genetic diversity. They also help with colonization, getting biodiversity to areas where it wasn"t present before. Can be structural or functional or a mix of both. Smaller: creek lines, living fences, culverts, overpasses. Larger: country or continent scale commitments to conservation, ex. Y2k yukan to yellowstone corridor: conceptual, commitment and promise to protect and maintain to have healthy ecosystem productivity. By 2012, 11 species of large mammals began to use the wildlife crossings: grizzlies, black bears, wolves, coyotes, wolverines, cougars, lynx, moose, elk, deer, bighorn sheep. Form continuity from more beautiful rainforest all the way down. Part of the mesoamerican corridor: commitment of all these countries to protect biodiversity"s habitast throughout this area. Planning for future corridors climate change may reduce suitable habitat in protected areas as a response to climate change: protect expected migration routes. Extend pas in direction of anticipated movement.
