EEB215H1 Lecture Notes - Lecture 14: Ecological Extinction, Vulnerable Species, Endemism
Document Summary
Lecture 9 extinction and vulnerability to extinction. Extinction is a natural process, there have been ups and downs. Extinction rates now are greater than any natural ones. Locally extinct no longer present in a former range. Threats: agriculture, conversion of marsh to rice farms, hunting, introduction of carnivorous fish, introductions of food competitors, hybridization with little grebes, pollution, soil erosion, sedimentation. Species was poor disperser and endemic to region. But still no one has seen one since 1978 last seen in 1978 they were about to declare it extinct but then some hunters showed them some proof. Species still present but it doesn"t means that they"re not on their way to extinction. More or less ecologically extinct because they have only found two individuals. Botanists raising and cultivating this species a lot in captivity. Number of species threatened with extinction in major groups of animals and plants.
