Document Summary
Cri210 week 6 october 31st, 2016. Original legal system said to discriminate against the poor. Only poorest are actually eligible for legal aid. Those economically disadvantaged were doubly disadvantaged because they had to represent themselves in court. Legal aid system in north american began after a case where a serious murder had to represent themselves. First canadian legal aid program: ontario 1967: only provided to those on social assistance or to those with personal incomes less than social assistance levels. People can end up paying up to 150,000 dollars for legal representation and if convicted you do not get that money back. Going to court to face allegations, can be seen as a financial punishment, especially for those who are poor. Suggested that for serious crimes, where individuals face 10 years or more in prison, representation be paid for by the government.
