Cri205 week 11: gender differences in criminal justice outcomes. Competing hypotheses: the chivalry hypothesis: women are treated more leniently at all staged of the criminal justice system, the evil woman hypothesis: women are often treated more harshly than men accused of the same types of crime. Female youth much more likely than males to be institutionalized for long periods of time for being incorrigible or immoral . Institutionalization deemed necessary for rehabilitation and treatment of out of control female sexuality. Female police officers do not engage in that type of show - treat female civilians more harshly. Interesting that female police officers do not treat males differently: male police officers behave consistently with chivalry hypothesis. Police and sexual harassment: large number of instances when police engage in sexual harassment not only with female police officers but also civilians. Nov. 23, 2020: use interactions with civilians to get phone numbers, dates, etc.
