Cri205 week 10: gender differences in criminal behaviour and victimization. Strain perspective doesn"t hold looking at gender differences - can explain it within women and within men, but not men and women. The women"s liberation or the sex-role convergence thesis. Focused on male population/male subjects: need new criminology that will focus on women and female populations. Challenging the liberation hypothesis: males still dominate most forms of criminality (both property and violent, most females criminality is minor. No signifiant increase with respect to serious violence: most females involved in serious offending have a male accomplice, no increase in female white collar offending. Increase in the female arrest rate may reflect changes in police practices rather than significant changes in female behaviour. Police may now make arrests in women involving in minor offences - tougher on women. For example, men outnumbered women as victims of homicide in canada by a ratio of 3:1.
