It includes within its scope the process of making laws, breaking laws and reacting towards the breaking of laws: criminology is an objective social science. As such it involves: the development of theory, the formulation of research hypotheses, the collection of information to test research hypotheses, the evaluation of research findings. Most crimes are voluntary, engaged in that act with intent. Exceptions of being guilty of a crime without intent: manslaughter, hitting a pedestrian while driving drunk: harmful vs. harmless behaviours. Speeding increases probability of the act being harmful: the social context of behaviour. Punching someone in class or at a hockey game. Types of crime and deviance: consensus crimes: murder, rape, armed robbery, child molestation, conflict crimes: pornography, prostitution, drug use, gambling, social deviations: alcoholism, bisexuality, addiction to pornography, cyber-bullying, social diversions: body piercing, cross-dressing.
