Canada considers the rcmp as a national symbol. Royal canadian mounted police: national, federal, provincial and municipal, first nation communities, airports, more than 28,000 officers & personnel, national symbol of canada. Rcmp foundational history: 1873 north western mounted police (nwmp, 1904 nwmp royal nwmp, 1920 rnwmp + dominion police = rcmp, 1922 & 1923 attempts to restrict/abolish rcmp. Diversity in the rcmp is still an ongoing issue. Time and space: time and present are connected. Settler colonies (old empire): early independence from europe, new part of the west or global north or developed world , settler colonists became mainstream population, social majority. Policing does not have a single origin point. Integration of force and functions: distinct organization of actors, centralized command structure, functionally different from military, branch of criminal justice system. Mounties as international police: social order and civilizing missions, canada federation v. indigenous sovereignties, canada as part of greater britain.
