Document Summary
Film genre cycle a distinctive and more focused category than genre. A series of genre films produced during a limited period of time and linked by a dominant trend in their use of the genre"s conventions. A cycle is often sparked by a benchmark hit, a prototype that is initiated, refined, or resisted by those that follow. Genres experience cycles as important phases in their development. A cycle presents a variable often fresh treatment of a genre"s fundamental conflicts under the influence of a particular time, place, and circumstance. The cluster a similar unit for analysis but one that lacks a coherent model or common motifs from the same period. No strong prototype, but a flurry of films covering an overlapping milieu, theme, or type of characters. Warner brothers became known for this genre. Started out in nickelodeon, but were forced out by the trust (headed by edison) because they patented the movies and took over distribution.
