Document Summary
Chm135h1 f - lecture 28 - chapter 17 (1) Have learned how to calculate the heat or energy flow for an arbitrary process, including in an chemical reaction. General trend: exothermic reactions tend to equilibrate favoring products (equilibrium concentration mostly products), but not always. Consider expression of ideal gas into a vacuum at constant t. Always observe the same final state for real systems. Systems tend to evolve in such a way that they become more disordered i. e. there are equivalent ways of arranging the system. Scientists invented a measure of this disorder: entropy. Idea of entropy production : as systems move toward an equilibrium state they become more disordered: entropy increases. This gives a sense of natural time evolution: an arrow of time. Equilibrium state refers to the set of configuration which give the same thermodynamic properties t, p, density, etc.
