Document Summary
Chm135h1 f - lecture 10 - chapter 11 (2) Measure of disorder; higher entropy = more disorder. Solids are most ordered, as atoms / molecules are in fixed location; can vibrate, but cannot move from one location to another. Liquids are free-flowing, non-compressible fluid that does not occupy entire container; atoms / molecules interact with each other but not in organized way. Gas will occupy all the space in the container, so is least ordered: gases are fluid ( flowing"), but it is a compressible fluid. If g > 0, the reaction will not occur spontaneously (without addition of energy, under given conditions) If g < 0, the reaction is spontaneous under those conditions. On earth, we have a constant pressure and a variable temperature. We can observe the phase changes of water, as at 1. 0 atm, the dotted, horizontal line crosses areas where each of the phases are favored (i. e. we can observe all three normally)
