Document Summary
We need o2 in the etc without the etc, we get a build-up of nadh & fadh2. Pdc & cac is inhibited by nadh build-up. Thus, we will have a build-up of pyruvate. Lactate dehydrogenase (ldh) upregulated in the absence of oxygen. Pyruvate will be reduced to form lactate; nadh is oxidized to nad+ Pyruvate molecule can also be converted to oxaloacetate. But also for gng in the liver. Gluconeogenesis an alternate method in the liver (in addition to glycogen breakdown) to make glucose. Lactate is converted into glucose (mostly occurs in the liver but also ~10% in the kidney); other non-carbohydrate precursors (glycerol or amino acids) can be used as well. Cori cycle in the red blood cells (don"t have mitochondria ) but also in muscle cells (low o2) Lactate (export out of a muscle cell or being produced in an rbc) comes into the liver. Lactate dehydrogenase now regenerates pyruvate from lactate (opposite direction)
