Ast201: our home galaxy, the milky way (chp 19. 1-19. 4) One among tens of billions of galaxies in the observable universe. Takes 230 million yrs to rotate 1 orbit around the milky way. Entire galaxy is 1000,000 light yrs in diameter. Sun located in the disk is 26,000 lights yrs from galactic center- a little more than halfway out from the center to the edge of the disk. The wavelength of infrared light is larger than the size of a dust particle. Distance from milky way bulge to our sun. Answer: c takes our sun (& our whole solar system) 230 million yrs to complete 1 orbit around the milky wsay. Globular clusters densely packed spheres of hundreds of thousands of very old stars (found in the halo) Stars in the disk orbit in roughly a circular path that goes in the same direction & nearly the same plane. (stars bob up and down thru the disk)
