Document Summary

This figure shows galaxy formation & where galaxies are formed in the universe. Gas losing energy is equal to the dynamical time. Instead of forming one big galaxy, it will form smaller objects than the 1013msun (solar matter) Gases like milky way can cool gas efficiently. Gas that comes in early can form the early milky way disk, over time more & more gas can collect & cools down on the disk, why range/age of forming stars at different times. Dwarf galaxies can only cool gas early on in the universe, reason why dwarf galaxies are usually old. The first model of how we think galaxies form. Looked at stars in milky way to see what was happening. Two populations of stars in mw: younger stars (similar to sun, orbits in disks) & red stars which have a metal core (oxygen, iron, have higher velocities, far orbits from the centre) These astronomers focused on the population 2 stars.
