Armies on opposite sides dug into trenches in northwestern france. As a young man, could be delivered to one of these trenches. Trenches cower, wet, periodically, other side would send fire, shrapnel, could be sent up over the top. Shooting gallery of soldier with powerful automatic weapons. Stench, horrific conditions, a feeling of pointlessness. You know the odds are not terrific. Great war caused a tremendous trauma in europe. Led to complete sense of being fed up and exhausted with political and cultural systems. That permitted a war like that for which the cause remain complicated and obscure. Couldn"t rely on logic or enemy notion to justify the war. Germany signed a ceasefire but not surrender, political implications. A group of young artists, poets, writers set up events that wanted to capture attention of public and press.
