Document Summary
Emphasis on the horizontal to be more grounded and set it in its site/landscape. Used roman brick, in keeping with the horizontal theme (long wide brick) Used materials that were organic to the place that they were constructed. Trying to create an experience within the building for the occupants. Term comes from an exhibition at the moma in 1932. Quite unusual for an architect and an architectural historian to create an exhibition. Brought together 50 architects from 15 countries around the world whose work they felt was representative of the modern architecture at the time. Saw an emphasis on the volume of space. There was worldwide this interest in focussing on the spaces contained within exterior planes of the building envelope. They also noticed that there was a sense of regularity (not symmetry) Another characteristic is the interest and the focus on the materials and the intrinsic quality of the materials.
