Document Summary

Most primates eat a variety of fruits, insects, flowers, and leaves. Few species eat mostly only leaves, which take special gut adaptations to digest. Complex stomach = amazing adaptation to allow bacteria fermentation of leaves. Generally, larger-bodied species can eat more leaves whereas smaller-bodied species can eat more insects. Moist rhinarium: wet nose; enhanced senses of smell. Jawbone composed of 2 lateral bones that join in the middle (meeting point = symphysis) Upper lip connects to nose or gum; limits range of facial expressions. Tapetum lucidum: reflective layer at the back of their eyes that allows them to see in low light conditions; their eyes glow. Postorbital bar: ring of bone around eye socket. Arboreal quadrupeds and leapers; some are partially terrestrial. Many small-bodied species are nocturnal; large eyes indicates nocturnal. Retinal fovea: reduces night vision, but improves visual acuity. Upper lip does not connect to nose or gum, enabling wide range of facial expressions.
