World happiness report: canada is #7, top are scandinavian countries (us #10) The bottom of the list is mostly countries in africa some relation of wealth to happiness. Neoliberal policies aim at freeing (liberalizing) local markets. Imf and the world bank lend money to countries who will institute market reforms (usa and other rich countries) Focus on financing and advice rather than direct involvement, usually with conditions. Criticism austerity measures are cruel: the reforms cause too much hardship, Microfinance: small scale lending - lend money to poor people (entrepreneurs, for small stores, stands, farms, etc). Privately run program, but may draw on government for international support. Interest rates are high, sometimes violence a problem with collection, businesses have to compete with each other. Women collect the money, but the men end up using it. Fair trade movement: only products that have been properly paid for, fair wage. Sometimes the governments are still corrupt, certification process is corrupt.
