Document Summary
Linguistic and socio-cultural anthropology lecture 2: signifying reality. Note on terminology: anthropologists do not aim to tell you what terms to use when signifying reality: Social sciences describes before it can prescribe (if it ever can). You feel that the white surgeon can perform better than minority one or employer gives job to white person more than blacks. Systemic: not just personal (you may not be a racist but you live in a racist environment: you can be black and be racist/prejudiced against blacks) Not just about are you a racist . Police brutality: its not just that the officers are personally racist, it"s just that the system tells us blacks are more violent than whites. Race is real in that it operates in society, even though it is invented (based on biological factors and on constructed factors such as culture)
