It is not just a means of communication: it carries history one"s entire history is carried in the language one speaks. Loss of aboriginal languages in canada why: rupture between generations, residential schools: When a language is stripped from a person, they are being stripped from their identity. They were punished for speaking in their own languages. There was a loss of power for residential school students. Although their mother tongues were stripped from them they were not even taught french and english adequately so they are not able to communicate in any way. They were also forced into feeling ashamed of their languages and cultures.
