Document Summary
Long range migrants move to urban areas: most migrants are adults, over long distances, males migrate more than females, over short, females more than males. Classic theories of migration 2 samuel stouffer: stouffers law of intervening opportunirites: ,rather than proceeding to the originally planned destination. Increases decreases pay ( and union control) in these domains. Immigration can have different effects on the inequality between men and women. If we consider indivduals (not families) as the unit of analysis, men and women have different experiences following migration: as well, migration may change balance of relationships within families. In other cases: husbands may manage to find jobs, the wives stay home with children, but without jobs, english language skills, or local friends and kin, these women are very dependent on their husbands, vulnerable to abuse. In short, immigrant experiences are gendered: men typically take the lead in family making migration decisions, families generally move to improve husbands opportunities, not wives.
