Week #9 reading notes: postmodern feminism + queer theory. Focuses on gendered identities, body displays, and sexualities: the idea is that these socially constructed and manipulated for social order and this will be changed. Performativity performance of normative gender and sexuality maintains gendered social order. Bodies, identities and status are contingent on: time, situation, cultural contexts, as such norms are produced + reproduced and ergo, gender. Judith butler gender trouble : performance + identity are the same (ie. maleness/femaleness on the body vs. heterosexuality on the psyche, as such, there is a concious deliberation involved (ie. transgenders) Queer theory challenges binaries in other categories: male/female, woman/man, homo/hetero, three is hardly the limit in queer theory to limit sex, sexuality and gender categories. Drag form of parodying the other . Transgendering free agency of postmodern feminism and queering. Runs head-on with gendered laws and bureaucracies. If gendered categories are fluid: gender as a legal category/status will lose its power.
