Week #8 reading notes: feminist studies of men. Scrutinizes masculinity same way as other feminists scrutinize femininity. Original object of analysis was masculinity in direct opposition to femininity. Since much of masculinity was performed in order to avoid appearing feminine. Showed what was socially encouraged in men and boys. Hegemonic masculinity is inter-gendered (men hegemonic compared to women) and intra-gendered (certain men are hegemonic compared to other men) Hegemonic men hold most of the power and privilege compared to other men. They are both born into it (whiteness) and also achieve it (education) Hegemonic men monopolize privileges, resources, and power. Control politics, policies, and impose their views. Because of colonization, hegemonic men have been dominant for the past. Western masculinity may become the worldwide hegemonic form of masculinity. Creates a global gender hierarchal of domination and subordination. Daddy bonus contrasts with motherhood penalty. Men with privilege in the workforce get an increase in salary once they become fathers.
