Level pitches doesn"t travel too far from original. Undulating does it form like a wave as melody continues. Arch-shaped start lower pitch, then gradually increases to lower again. Conjunct does the melody move by step (pitches very close together) Ex: plainsong/chant (gregorian chant) is a style that can be sung in range well. Within a narrow range for the human voice (only 5 pitches) Motion: moves by conjunct motion (narrow range) In this era we tend to find music that has ornamentation in it. Musical illustration of the meaning of a word or a short phrase within the music or melodic line. Main vocal genre of the 16th century. Vehicle for experimentation topics of the poetry (wars, love, battles, references to greek and roman mythology)
