Statistics a way of reasoning, along with a collection of tolls and methods designed to help us understand the world. Statistics is about variation, where things vary such as: people are different, can"t see everything or measure it all, what we can measure might be. Individual cases (individuals) are the objects that described by a set of data; there are cases that can be involve with people, animals, things and etc: what? (variables) A variable is any characteristic of an individual case; it can take different values on different cases. E. g. a college"s data base: the individuals would be the students of the college, the variables would be date of birth, gender, choice of major, gpa and etc. Other variables such as gender, college major that can place individuals into categories. Others like height, gpa can take numerical values with which we can do arithmetic: why? (objective)
