SOCC55H3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Meritocracy
Document Summary
As we have discussed in class, places can be raced. However, while we have primarily focused on how questions of belonging affect the construction of membership ( where are you really from? ), neighborhoods are also often raced. Carl james brings this understanding to this localized intersection. It stripped particular bodies from their individuality and make them representative of the community they live in. The social construction of troubled communities and at-risk youth follows historical narratives regarding the space occupied by the other. : these spaces operate as borders and are defined spaces od abjectivity and chaos. It"s the places where we find communities can also be constructed as chaotic and dangerous. Those who are constructed coming out of community, they escaped or rose above from their community becomes the dominant. The value of community is being denied or is discursive.
