Document Summary
It"s not just about creating this world but about reinforcing this world: not everybody is popular in school, some people don"t care at all, they"re just in school, nonetheless, everybody is aware of the popularity hierarchy. Focus was how children were creating and demonstrating gender between them. She"s looking at how schools create this black masculinity as an opposition that needs punishment and control. 4th grade girl being too loud and walking out in hallway and principal tells her to walk up the stairs, and she does it with parity/attitude. Stereotypes and image of black men and the fear in general that people have affected by black men feeding them as criminal type. In statistics, black men in us are only 6% of population, but 45% are incarcerated in jail. Stereotype = black men are criminals: race are played differently in canada, are freer in history, no slavery, but it doesn"t mean there is no racial dynamic here in canada.
