Week 4: lecture #3: wednesday january 25th 2017. The history of gender in relationship to the labour market: the pre-capitalist period. Comprised of men, expeditions covered by the rising merchant class. Women were in fact a part of trading: they trapped, were in charge of the trading posts, build strong relationships, did the fishing. Some women: working for charitable institutions. Status: among men (noble men + peasant men, among women (noble women + peasant women) Women still relied on man to earn income and protect them. Around 1750 a near equal gender balance began. Masculinization: the system that is closely tied to male domination. Separating the work place from the home: prior to industrialization people worked from their home. For middle class: could afford for women not to work. Reserve army of labour: when companies needed a large amount of labour, women were looked at because they are considered cheap labour, this only happens when men are at a shortage.
