As you can see, cohen"s theory was firmly rooted in strain theory. What makes him different is that his theory focussed on youth and not people in general (strain theory applied to youth and adults). Extended and revised version of merton"s strain theory. The academic standards of school by which students are judged by the teacher. These include completing homework, deferring gratification (working hard like year and delaying fun until the summer), respecting teachers. More social aspects like attendance, punctuality, class participation, obedience. Note that the middle class measuring rod has little, if anything, to do with actual academic performance or success.
