Contemporary educational streaming is less rigid than it once was: Students are encouraged, rather than required, to enrol in different level of courses: streaming is based on course selection, university entrance requires advanced course, selection decisions are made on the basis of, grades. Nevertheless, students who take applied courses rather than academic (advanced) in high school: Have fewer opportunities for post secondary education. Streaming in the 10th grade in 4 canadian provinces in 2000 (harvey krahn and alison taylor) More recents finding still finds the same patterns for streaming. 30-40% of high school drop out rate in hamilton; this is not consider as a problem, b/c there are stable amount of working class jobs (ex. working at the lakes) Poorer, less well-educated parents not familiar with the workings of the educational system: won"t be able to give their kids useful advices. Fewer well educated role models and mentors for students from poorer less well-educated background.
