Race is socially constructed reality, not biological one. Race refers to physical characteristics, ethnicity refers to cultural features. Ethnic groups: a collection of people distinguished by others or by themselves primarily on the basis of cultural or nationality characteristics. Ethnic groups share 5 main characteristics: unique cultural traits such as language, clothing, holidays or religious practice territory. feeling of ethnocentrism, sense of community. Ethnicity, like race, is a basis of hierarchical ranking in a society. John potter described canada as vertical mosaic made up of different ethnic groups wielding varying degrees social and economic power, status and prestige. This analysis revealed ethnic stratification with some groups heavily represented in upper class while some in lower.
