What does it mean to be educated: to be educated doesn"t mean to have a degree, someone who has a master"s degree doesn"t mean that they less educated than those who have a bachelor degree. Where does one receive education: received a significant amount of education from our families. Often considered to have fundamental functionalization: endow key capacities of communication, coordination, and economic productivity , schools accomplish two main tasks: homogenizing and sorting . Homogenizing: enforcing common standards that serve as a cultural common denominator : producing similarities/sameness. Sorting: favors the students who develop the greatest facility in the common culture while confining those of lesser skills to subordinate work roles and lower ranks in the class structure : separating according to talent. Replaced religion as the main ideological state apparatus althusser: althusser believed societal relations dictated by ideology. Restrictive state apparatuses enforce and police adherence to ideology. It was religion that taught us how to think.
