Continuous concern over perceived dangers of weakening/changing family ties. Shifts or changes in makeup of family. Family = glorified as safe and a key site to production of well-adjusted citizens. Can also be site of violence - 2009 4/10 homicides in canada occur within a family or intimate relationships. Types of family: within west - nuclear family most normal. Nuclear family: two married opposite-sex parents and their biological children who live together. Features heteronormative (people fall into distinct gender with natural roles), monogamous (only one partner, opposite of polygamy), child-rearing and spans two generations. A more narrow definition is a traditional nuclear family - man works outside and the woman stays at home. Not as prevalent now - key feature - male dominated.
