Features heteronormative (people fall into distinct gender with natural roles), monogamous (only one partner, opposite of polygamy), child-rearing and spans two generations. A more narrow definition is a traditional nuclear family - man works outside and the woman stays at home. Not as prevalent now - key feature - male dominated.
