•In this class, we will introduce ourselves to stress in a holistic manner, looking at those three disorders
with that lens
•Yes, bipolar disorder and schizophrenia can be passed onto the next generation by a 60%-65% chance;
however, for example, in twin studies, it has been shown that the environment plays a good factor as
well
•In this class, we will think critically about our mental health system
•Keep up with with readings ahead of time
•We learn the topic first, then discuss and criticize and analyze in class
•There are marks for participation
•Having done the readings

or controversial; it’s argumentative. Bring two peer-reviewed articles. Have a thesis. With evidence to
back up your views.

•Critical research review paper at end of term
•Submit an outline of paper 3-4 weeks prior to due date for feedback
•Can be on any topic relevant to our class: stress and mental health
•Do not try to prove something you think you know—try to turn it into a question
Mindfulness
Be completely in the present; not thinking of the past, or the future. Using your 5
senses (touch, taste, smell, sight, and sound). Observe the present moment. Be fully
aware of where you are, and what you is going on around you. For example, what do
you hear? Perhaps you smell the candle or incense you have lit.
However, whatever senses you feel, taste, smell, see, or hear: you are not to apply any
judgements to them—whether positive or negative. For
example, “I hate the sound of the birds chirping,” or, “I love the smell of my favourite
food in the oven right now.”
Simply accept everything around you, concentrating on breathing, and your 5 senses.
