Document Summary

Keep in mind the book is published 2007, prior to release to dsm-v; no changes to personality disorder. Common, debilitating psychiatric conditions that have enormous costs to patients and their family members, and to society. Conditions are also widely misunderstood and misdiagnosed: no tests are certain; based on history of individual seeking treatment and family members providing info. Model of pds in the diagnostic and statistical manual of mental disorders (dsm)-iv had serious conceptual and empirical shortcomings: pd placed on a separate diagnostic axis to encourage clinicians to recognize the presence of maladaptive personality traits. Personality pattern disturbances were viewed as the most entrenched conditions. Personality trait disturbances were thought to be less pervasive and disabling, so in the absence of stress these patients could function relatively well. If under significant stress, patients with emotionally unstable, passive- aggressive, or compulsive personality were thought to show emotional distress and deterioration in functioning.
