Johann friedrich herbart: activities of mind can"t be studied experimentally: would entail dividing mind- mid is a whole: it can be expressed mathematically. Ideas; remnants of sense impressions, but have force, life of their own. Apperceptive mass: group of ideas we are currently aware of: apperception: process of becoming aware of something. Ideas that are striving for expression create negative emotions. Ideas that make it into consciousness have allied ideas. Weber"s law: states that just noticeable difference is proportional to the intensity of the original stimulus. Fechner"s law: states that perception changes linearly as stimulus changes geometrically. Psychophysics: study of relation bet/ mind and body. Absolute threshold: lowest intensity at which a stimulus can be detected. Quantity objection: sensations may vary in quality but no magnitude. Mechanics of sensation: the relationship bet/ objects, sensory experience and perception is still up for debate.
