Document Summary

Week #1 lecture #1: thursday september 03, 2015. Why does history matter: learn the evolution of ideas. Some ideas keep coming back: appreciate links among subdisciplines, understand context of development of ideas and research efforts/findings. A fundamental motivation: ppl want to make sense of what they encounter , incl natural events, superstition, rituals, religion, philosophy, science all attempt to explain, control, predict environment and others. Some aspect of psychological thinking has always existed: ex: views of abnormal behaviour. What we experience always differs because we experience through our senses. We can never directly experience the actual form of anything , yet we seek them/should seek them. Relates to operational definitions: ex: intelligence, beauty. Plato"s analogy of the divided line (refer to printout) Must be drawn out to be used: we only need to apply and extend innate knowledge to understand everything. Relationships to others structured by roles: taoism.
