Document Summary

Mdma psychopharmacology: oral administration, peak blood plasma levels occur after approximately two hours. Elimination half-life is approximately nine hours: recreational doses remain in the body for at least 24 hours. Mdma and neurotransmission: mdma increases serotonin levels via: Inhibition of 5-ht transportation into synaptic storage vesicles. Reversal of 5-ht reuptake transporters: at higher doses, mdma increases dopamine levels via parallel mechanisms, chronic mdma use produces severe damage to serotonin neurons. Mdma"s psychostimulant actions: elevated dopamine and serotonin levels account for mdma"s adverse effects, high doses of mdma substantially activate the sympathetic nervous system. Higher body temperature: psychologically, mdma may cause adverse conditions, rebound effects: Mdma temporarily deplete 5-ht and da stores. Cognitive deficits occur from repeated mdma use. Mdma use in psychotherapy: mithoefer and colleagues (2011) assessed low-dose mdma treatment in conjunction with psychotherapy in patients with ptsd. Mdma-treated patients exhibited an 83% reduction in ptsd symptoms. Placebo-treated ptsd patients only exhibited a 25% reduction in ptsd symptoms.
