PSYC55H3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Caudate Nucleus, Purkinje Cell, Neuroglia
Document Summary
Delgado implanted an electrical simulator in the caudate nucleus of a bull to stop aggression. Neurons: are the basic signalling units that transmit information throughout the nervous system. Glial cells are nonneural cells that serve various functions in the nervous system eg. to provide structural support/ electrical insulation to neurons/ modulation of neuronal activity soma (cell body): contains the metabolic machinery that maintains a neuron. The dendrites and axons are extensions of the cell membrane and contain cytoplasm continuous with that of the cell body. Purkinje cells are predominately found in the cerebellum. Dendrites: are branching extensions of the neuron that receive inputs form other neurons. Axon: extends from the cell body, and electrical signals travel the entire length of the axon. Synapse: is where transmission occurs of either electrical or chemical signals. Axon collaterals: axons branch such that it can transmit signals to more than one cell.
